Zach Brown: These eight years have passed like two years.
Zach Brown took over the McLaren Technology Group in November 2016, and at that time the legendary team was going through a protracted crisis. The following year, she took penultimate place in the Constructors' Cup, and the London newspaper The Guardian called McLaren the main disappointment of the season.
That was Brown's legacy back then, but 8 years later his team won the Constructors' Cup and is now leading in both championship events. In an interview with Bloomberg, the business information agency, the McLaren Racing executive director summarized his work in this position.
Zach Brown: "When I joined McLaren and started working, we finished the 2017 championship in 9th place, and it was the worst season in the history of the team. Relations with McLaren's regular partners reached a low point, so did the team's morale, and the fans were very upset by our results – in general, the situation was very unimportant.
But in all this, I saw an opportunity to make improvements, because it couldn't get any worse, and there was only one direction to move in – upward. The first thing I did was I started solving marketing problems. I understood that I could help the team if I fixed its economic situation, and if it worked out, I would be able to attract new resources.
In turn, this will help our technical department, because it will be possible to build a new wind tunnel, modernize CFD equipment and our production site, because at that time we lagged behind in terms of technology.
Therefore, I immediately took up the tasks that were primarily clear to me, i.e. building a commercial component. I knew that McLaren is a legendary brand and a great team, and if we solve the primary economic problems, it will allow us to attract new partners by sharing our vision with them.
When we started doing this, the mood of our entire technical department began to gradually improve, because I provided them with new, more advanced tools and technologies that they could use in their work.
The process took some time, but I believe that in our sport it is always most important to gain the necessary momentum, and when I managed to bring the team to a higher level, it accelerated on its own.
You see, I've been in charge of McLaren Racing for eight years now, and it felt like the first two years dragged on like all eight. And now that those eight years are over, it seems to me that they have flashed by like two years, because now we are having a lot of fun working!"
