Russell and Minardi are the latest to criticize Norris.
"We are 60 points behind them due to their errors."
George Russell has criticized Formula 1 front-runners McLaren, asserting that the team from Woking should easily secure the world championships in 2025. On paper, the Mercedes driver is in contention for the title, being only 14 points shy of Lando Norris’ lead. Nevertheless, Russell believes that the championship leader should be in a stronger position.
"I’d like to say it’s achievable," Russell responded when asked about his championship prospects, "but you’ve seen how McLaren performs well in the hands of a capable driver. They are clearly ahead of the competition." The mention of ‘the right driver’ is a pointed remark towards Norris, who did not perform well in Bahrain, finishing third—behind both winner Oscar Piastri and Russell.
"We (Mercedes) are currently 60 points behind them in the championship, likely due to their mistakes rather than sheer performance," Russell stated in Saudi Arabia. "You could argue that (McLaren) could have claimed first and second in every race so far this season."
Russell, however, predicts that McLaren may experience a performance decline in Barcelona, where the FIA will impose stricter rules regarding wing flexibility, which is particularly notable on the Papaya-colored car. "That’s obviously where McLaren has excelled," Russell mentioned. "So, until that race, I don’t foresee any significant changes in ranking. That weekend will be crucial to see if they regress and if other teams close the gap."
In response, McLaren’s boss Andrea Stella dismissed this notion, asserting that teams without excessively flexible wings are not necessarily slower. "If you choose to operate within the regulations, your performance becomes a matter of compromise," the Italian explained. "There are advantages to Red Bull’s approach, and they put in a lot of effort."
Aside from McLaren's stronghold, Norris' current position is a notable discussion point in the Jeddah paddock. Former F1 team owner Giancarlo Minardi, commenting from a distance, compared Piastri’s evolution to that of "a complete driver." "In my view, he is the top contender for the title, given Norris’ mental challenges," he remarked.
Piastri embraces his growing reputation for mental resilience. "I consider it one of my strengths—staying composed in critical situations," the Australian stated. "I hope it's not my only strength," he joked.
In contrast, Norris admits to facing difficulties in the days following Bahrain. "I needed a few days off to recharge," the Brit shared, "and I wouldn’t mind a few more days now. I realize I can be too critical of myself," Norris added. "Ninety-five percent of the time, it’s a positive trait that shapes who I am. Yet I acknowledge there have been moments when I've focused too much on negativity, and it has lingered in my mind."
