Horner held informal talks with Russell.
Rumors about the possible departure of Max Verstappen from Red Bull Racing at the end of the season appear with enviable regularity, although the driver himself assures that he is not going to change the team. It seems that the management of the team from Milton Keynes is not completely sure about Max.
Helmut Marko, Red Bull's motorsport consultant, has already said that he fears a scenario in which Verstappen leaves the team. Apparently, the head of Christian Horner has the same concerns.
According to The Race, Horner has held several informal meetings with Mercedes driver George Russell in recent weeks. No specific offer has been made yet, but Horner has been finding out how much Russell is interested in the Red Bull Racing option.
George's contract expires at the end of the season, and although Toto Wolff is happy with his driver, Mercedes does not specify a time frame in which the contract with Russell can be extended. The fact is that Toto wants to leave a vacancy in the team for as long as possible in case Verstappen decides to leave Red Bull Racing.
At the same time, there is a scenario in which Max will sign a contract with Aston Martin or even take a break to see which team has adapted better to the new regulations, and Russell will sign a contract with Red Bull Racing. In this case, Wolff will be left without a leading driver, and as a temporary solution, he can sign a contract for the season with Valtteri Bottas.
