      Max Verstappen and the McLaren team were nominated for the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards, awarded to the best athletes and teams at the end of last year.

      The four-time world champion competed for the title of "Best Athlete" with pole vaulter Armand Duplantis, cyclist Tadey Pogachar, tennis player Carlos Alcaraz and swimmer Leon Marchand.

      McLaren's rivals in the "Best Sports Team" nomination were the Real Madrid football club, the Spanish men's national football team, the Barcelona women's football club, the Boston Celtics basketball club and the USA men's national basketball team.

      The winners were announced at a ceremony in Madrid the day before. Olympic champion Armand Duplantis became the "best athlete". The "Best athlete" is seven–time Olympic champion in gymnastics Simone Biles, and the "Best team" is Real Madrid.
