Alonso: Adrian Newey knows how best to act
Fernando Alonso has repeatedly stressed that he intends to drive for Aston Martin in 2026, so it is logical that he supports Adrian Newey's decision to fully focus on building a new generation car and not waste time trying to fix the shortcomings of the AMR25. And this is despite the fact that the efficiency of the current chassis is at a very low level, and Alonso speaks directly about this.
Last Thursday, the Aston Martin F1 hosted the first meeting of this year between the two-time world champion and the renowned racing car designer, who has been working in the Lawrence Stroll team since this spring.
Fernando came to Silverstone to work on the simulator and hold a number of meetings with engineers, including a chat with Adrian Newey, after which the press service of Aston Martin shared a couple of photos showing Alonso in the company with the managing technical partner of the team. The comment to the pictures is very brief: "We are laying the foundation for the future."
When Fernando was asked if he would like Newey to spend some time upgrading the AMR25, the Spanish driver replied: "I think he makes his own decisions in the end. He has enough rich experience and extensive knowledge to understand how best to act. I think he's only working on the 2026 project right now, and if that's what he's decided, then I fully support him.
Upgrading the AMR25 is not so important right now, because this year's cars are just modified versions of last year's chassis. I don't think the results we are seeing now are very different from the results of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December.
But next year, a completely new technical regulation will come into force, and everything we will learn this year will be reset. Probably, the information about the aerodynamics of the car that we are receiving now will not be very useful to us next year.
Of course, you always want to make progress during the season in order to keep your overall motivation at a high level. However, the team has a lot of motivation, because we have said more than once that we now have our own wind tunnel, which was launched a few weeks ago, now Adrian is working in the team, and next year we will receive Honda engines, so everyone's motivation is at a very high level."
