Zach Brown: We are not looking for new partners.
Before the Miami Grand Prix, Zach Brown took part in the program of the American CNBC television channel, by the way, McLaren's partner, and the conversation was mostly on business topics.
In particular, the McLaren Racing executive director was asked how the team's economy is affected by the fact that it is winning victory after victory, won the Constructors' Cup last year, and has been leading in both championship standings since the beginning of the new season.
"It manifests itself in different ways," Zach replied. – First of all, we race in order to win, and when we succeed, it has a positive effect on our economy. We receive prize payments from Formula 1, and this year they are based on our last year's results.
Of course, these payments are growing, and besides, in relations with our corporate partners, conditions are also stipulated that depend on the results of the team – the more successful you are, the more attractive you become in terms of business cooperation.
If we add these two factors together, it is clear that the team's economy is strengthening. And now we are not even actively searching for new partners, but are fully focused on developing the business ties that we have already established. The goal is to achieve victories on the tracks and continue to lead in both championship events, because our partners will benefit from this too."
Brown was also asked if there were further opportunities for Formula 1 to grow in popularity in the United States, although there are already three races on the championship calendar, which are held on three different American tracks.
He has no doubt that there are such opportunities: "If we compare the TV ratings of F1 with other most popular sports – the NBA and the NFL – then we still have a lot to grow. No one can reach this level yet, but we must try to reduce the gap. Of course, I think that the new film starring Brad Pitt, which will premiere in June, will attract additional attention to our sport.
The level of competition in modern Formula 1 is incredibly high and continues to grow. Last year, we had seven drivers who scored multiple victories, something that had never happened before in the history of the championship. And although the McLaren drivers have won four of the first five Grands Prix this season, we had to be seriously nervous every time. Do you see that my nails are all bitten off? (laughs)
In general, I think there are quite large opportunities for growth, and for this it is not necessary to increase the number of stages, but Formula 1 must explore new territories, and it is also possible to achieve an increase in television ratings.
The season already consists of 24 races – we just can't do more, but I've been suggesting this for a long time: let's do 20 races, but let's go, for example, to 8 more new markets and rotate stages every year.
That is, the geography of Formula 1 will expand, and the number of Grands Prix will increase there won't be, because 24 stages per year is already the limit in terms of logistics. It is the rotation of stages that is the only reasonable solution."
