Max Verstappen: I'm very happy to be on pole!
Max Verstappen won qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix with a new track record of 1:26.204 seconds. For the reigning world champion, this is the 3rd pole of the season and the 43rd of his career. The Red Bull Racing driver intends to compete in the race, but cautiously assesses his prospects.
Yuki Tsunoda showed tenth time in the qualifying final, losing more than seven tenths to his teammate.
Max Verstappen: (1st): "Great qualifying! We managed to improve the car a bit, which helped me in the corners. To be honest, I just improved in each session – in the first, second and final, trying to go a little beyond the limits of what is possible.
During the final lap, I had a little trouble in the first corner, which caused me to lose some time. It's difficult to get the tyres right on this track for the whole lap, but at the end everything worked as it should, so I'm very happy to be on pole.
I mean, after the trouble in the first corner, I could have backed off, but this is qualifying – here we have to try to fix the situation, so I just pressed the accelerator pedal at the exit of the turn.
Let's see what happens in the race. I do not know what our race pace is. Besides, let's see what the weather will be like. Anyway, I have the best starting position, which is great. It will be a completely different story in the race, but we will try to make the most of everything we have at our disposal."
Yuki Tsunoda (10th): "I keep improving and I'm glad that I was able to reach the final again, but of course I expected more than tenth place. So I have mixed feelings right now.
I'll do my best in the race. The good news is that I was able to earn points today. The race pace in training left much to be desired, but since then we have already significantly changed the car settings. I will try to make the most of the race and compete. It will be great if we can get a lot of points."
