Mohammed Bin Sulayem seeks more power
In the run-up to the election, FIA President Mohammed Bin Sulayem proposed reorganizing the federation's rules to strengthen his power and influence.
In particular, the FIA president intends to postpone the deadline for submitting applications for the elections to be held this year to an earlier date, which will prevent other candidates from participating. At the same time, there should be nothing in the track record of candidates that "would cast doubt on their professional integrity."
If such a rule is adopted, it will reduce the chances of Carlos Sainz Sr., given the obvious conflict of interest due to the fact that his son, Carlos Sainz Jr., competes in Formula 1 for Williams.
The deadline for the announcement of election results is proposed to be extended from 21 to 49 days, ostensibly so that candidates and their teams pass all checks. Critics fear that this will give the nominating committee more time to find reasons for rejecting candidates or members of the 11-person team going with them.
In addition, Ben Sulayem plans to change the composition of the World Motorsport Council (WMSC). . In particular, it is proposed that among the seven vice-presidents and 14 elected members there should be no more than two representatives of the same nationality, which, according to critics, will allow the FIA president to "recruit WMSC with the people he needs."
