Newey is engaged in discussions regarding the sluggish performance of the 2025 car.
"A small group is still focused on this year’s car."
Adrian Newey has stated that Aston Martin has not abandoned efforts to enhance the underperforming 2025 car. The renowned and well-compensated Formula 1 designer, who recently transitioned from Red Bull, has primarily been concentrating on the team’s completely new 2026 car since arriving at Silverstone in March. Nonetheless, there have been rumors suggesting that team owner Lawrence Stroll is extremely displeased with the 2025 car, as Fernando Alonso has, so far, not managed to earn a single point due to its lack of competitiveness.
"Lawrence rightfully wants us to perform at our best in 2025," Newey commented this week in an uncommon interview. "Hence, a small team is still working on this year’s car from an aerodynamics standpoint. I’ve had a few discussions during lunch with that team, talking about the car and what modifications we can make," he continued.
At 66, Newey mentioned that Alonso and teammate Lance Stroll, who is also Lawrence’s son, remain actively engaged in the efforts to enhance the AMR25. "I’ve had extensive talks with both Lance and Fernando, gathering their perspectives on the current car’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as the alignment between the real car and the simulator, and more," the British designer explained. "The drivers play a crucial role in the feedback loop, influencing how we adjust the engineering process and our approach."
Typically a familiar presence in the Formula 1 paddock, often seen on the grid with his iconic notebook and pen, Newey has been absent this season as he dedicates himself to his expertise—navigating a new set of radical regulations from the outset. Discussing his absence in 2025, he noted, "The deadlines in modern F1 appear to be much earlier than they were 20 years ago, and there are many approaching for the 2026 car, which is where my focus has been." However, when asked when fans might see him, Newey replied, "I intend to be in Monaco. With the notebook."
