F3: Tim Tramnitz wins the Imola sprint
Tim Tramnitz, a member of the Red Bull youth program, became the winner of Saturday's Formula 3 sprint in Imola. Bruno del Pino and Nikola Tsolov joined him on the podium.
Saturday morning greeted the riders with cloudless weather and an air temperature of +19C. Pole holder Bruno del Pino retained the lead at the start, although Tim Tramnitz actively pressed his teammate in the first two sectors.
Roman Bilinsky overtook Louis Sharpe in the fight for seventh place. The rest of the top ten drivers retained their positions on the first lap, as did championship leader Rafael Camara, who started twelfth.
On the third lap, Tramnitz conducted a successful attack on del Pino on the only straight DRS and led the peloton. Behind Louis, Sharp started to recoup and rose to fifth place.
On the fifth lap, yellow flags appeared on the track, and then a safety car pulled out due to the fact that the rear right wheel flew off Nicola Marinangeli's car at the exit of turn 7. Before that, Nikola cut the sixth turn hard on the gravel, and this could have caused the wheel nut to break.
The marshals slowly evacuated Marinangeli's car, and the race resumed on the ninth lap out of eighteen. The pair of leaders retained their positions, and after the fight with Tsolov, Mario rolled out of the top ten and went to the pits, where he turned off the engine and got off.
At the end of the lap, a safety car entered the track for the second time. The reason is that Mathias Zagazeta got stuck in the gravel of the second turn with a broken front suspension.
The restart was given on the twelfth lap. Nikola Tsolov tried to attack del Pino, but Bruno remained in second position. Tim Tramnitz showed the best time in an attempt to break away from his pursuers. However, Bruno del Pino recorded the best lap on the thirteenth lap and remained one second behind the leader.
On lap fourteen, at the exit of turn seven, after a fight with Tuukka Taponen, Noel Leon found himself off the track and dropped back to ninth place.
On the seventeenth lap, Hugo Ugochukwu made a mistake in Turn 12 - the Prema rider drove into gravel, lost time and returned to the track in eighth.
Tim Tramnitz took the race to his first victory of the season and reduced the gap in the individual standings by ten points from Rafael Camara, who finished eleventh. Bruno del Pino's second place was the best result in the Spanish driver's career. Nikola Tsolov rounded out the top three, and an additional point for the best lap went to Noah Stromstead.
