Another indication suggests Imola's departure from F1.
"We aim to maintain two or three rotational slots."
Another indication that Imola has likely hosted its last Formula 1 race for the time being has surfaced. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, who is from Imola, acknowledged recently that with the annual calendar limited to 24 races, it will be "challenging" for Imola to coexist on a schedule that also includes Monza.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown believes that a possible solution could involve Imola sharing a single rotational slot on the calendar with another European circuit, similar to the arrangement already established for Spa-Francorchamps. "I would support the elegant rotation solution here as well," Brown stated at Imola last weekend. "Although that's certainly easier said than done."
Domenicali mentioned to the New York Times that it's a possibility. "We want to maintain two or three rotational slots, no more," he remarked. "But that’s the only way to attract or be attractive to other locations."
However, regarding 2026, it seems that all hope may be lost for Imola. La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Italy's automobile club Aci has allocated 5 million euros per year for Monza between 2026 and 2032. In contrast, Imola has only received 5.25 million euros allocated for the 2025 race, which has already taken place and been won by Max Verstappen.
"Losing these types of tracks is unfortunate," the Dutch driver said after his victory on Sunday. "I understand it from the F1 perspective, of course - with the new tracks we are visiting. One must view it from both a sporting and financial standpoint.
"For me personally, when I talk about the joy of driving, it’s this kind of track that made me fall in love with racing overall. There have always been certain tracks where you admire the speeds, acknowledge how challenging they are to master, and appreciate the sport’s history at those venues.
"It's all very special and adds more emotion. It’s definitely a loss for me personally, but what can I do?" Verstappen added.
