Gasly: For some reason, we're just too slow.
Both Alpine F1 drivers were eliminated from qualifying in the first session, which, of course, upset both them and Flavio Briatore, who now serves as team leader. They were hardly greatly comforted by the fact that after the penalties received by the opponents, Pierre Gasly would rise one position up on the starting field, and Franco Colapinto – two.
Pierre Gasly (18th): "If you get eliminated in the first part of qualifying, it's always frustrating, so now I'm sad, I'm worried about the whole team. We didn't have enough pace today.
However, everything is relative, because we lost seven tenths to the best time of the session, which is exactly the difference between the top ten at the end of the session and the last five. For some reason, we're just too slow on this track.
The car loses stability on uneven asphalt, there is not enough grip, and in general it slides too much. We've tried several different settings, but we still haven't been able to figure out these flaws.
We have two mandatory pit stops tomorrow, so of course nothing is finished yet. But we need some events to happen on the track - in general, let's see what can be done tomorrow, and how we need to act in order to try to win back several positions and get to the top ten.
There are a lot of cars starting ahead of us, but I wonder what tactical schemes anyone will use. We just have to be ready to make the most of every opportunity, and then we'll see what we can achieve."
Franco Colapinto (20th): "It's not an easy day. We have problems with the pace of the car, especially on soft rubber in slow turns: at the exit from them there are difficulties with the clutch of the driving wheels during acceleration. We expected to get more out of the car on this track, but it didn't work out, and after qualifying like this, we have a difficult task ahead of us – tomorrow we need to somehow make our way forward.
We will try to take advantage of the uncertain situation that two mandatory pit stops can create during the race. It is unknown whether this will give someone an advantage, therefore, the race will be even more unpredictable. Moreover, the appearance of a safety car can have a positive impact on the tactics of any team, or vice versa, deprive them of all chances.
We'll have to work hard tonight to prepare for tomorrow's challenges."
Flavio Briatore: "When we went to Monaco, we thought that we would be able to achieve more competitive results on this track than we are showing this weekend. Saturday wasn't the best day, and it's clear that we need to make improvements and provide the drivers with a faster and more stable car.
Tomorrow's race will have two pit stops, and this increases our chances of doing something and moving forward tactically, so together with the engineers we will figure out what can be done tomorrow to help Pierre and Franco."
