Piastri: It's pretty hard to complain with these results.
Oscar Piastri won the Spanish Grand Prix and increased his lead over Lando Norris in the individual competition to ten points. At the FIA press conference, the Australian McLaren driver answered questions and called last weekend one of the strongest in his career.
Question: Oscar, a brilliant victory. A lot of things happened during the race. How difficult was it for you to handle everything?Lando Norris [sitting next to Oscar intervenes in the conversation]: Did you use my deodorant?
Oscar Piastri: No, I have my own.
Lando Norris: Is it female?
Oscar Piastri: No, it smells like chocolate. Sorry, we're just discussing deodorant. Lando, I can give you a sniff if you want.
So your question was about how I controlled the race from the car? Basically everything was under control. I didn't expect Max Verstappen to go into the race with three pit stops, because I didn't think this strategy would work. At least, as good as he almost got.
There was always something going on in the race – traffic, blue flags. In general, it turned out to be a little more interesting than I wanted. But with the exception of a few laps when I tried to drive through the laps, I had everything under control, and I could increase the pace if necessary.
So yes, a strong race and a strong weekend. I think we handled everything really well over the course of the race: we stuck to the strategic plan without being distracted by three pit stops, and we made our pit stops well. I think we just did a good job.
Question: You said you had a great weekend. Can you say that this was your strongest weekend in Formula 1 to date?Oscar Piastri: Definitely yes. I do not know if this is the best weekend, but it is definitely one of the strongest. You know, it's pretty hard to complain about anything, having achieved such results this weekend.
I think it's not just about the efforts made, but also about the analysis of some points from the last stage where we could have done better. I think we've changed the situation and returned to the shape we wanted to be in. And yes, I'm happy with the weekend. Definitely one of my strongest.
Question: What do you think about Max Verstappen's maneuver against George Russell at the end of the race?Oscar Piastri: To be honest, I don't really understand the context of what is happening. It all looks a bit strange. I think Max was going to take back the position, but I don't know what really happened between them. There was a misunderstanding or he didn't slow down… I do not know, I need context, but the blow was not so weak. I have nothing more to say, but it didn't look great.
Q: Are there any tracks where McLaren won't be so dominant?Oscar Piastri: I don't know. At Imola, we thought we would be faster, but they beat us to it. This weekend we were faster than expected compared to Red Bull. We thought they were going to be a real threat this weekend. They managed to ride alongside us in the race, but through strategy rather than sheer pace. Apparently, we have a slight advantage over them.
There will be tracks ahead where the rivals will be closer. I hope that there will be more tracks where they will be further away from us, but I do not know.
