Wasser: I prefer to be in 2nd place than in 4th or 5th.
In Barcelona, both Ferrari drivers scored points, while Charles Leclair, although he started seventh, was able to climb the podium, and Lewis Hamilton finished sixth. That is, one position worse than he started, and after the Spanish Grand Prix declared that it was his worst race.
But Leclair had a tactical advantage over his teammate in the race, as he had two new sets of Medium tires, as well as a relatively fresh set of soft tires, on which he drove only a couple of laps.
Hamilton used up more sets of rubber during qualifying, but his difficulties were compounded by the fact that there was a problem with Ferrari No. 44.
Therefore, Frederic Wasser is not inclined to dramatize and believes that the Scuderia is still progressing, because it has already outstripped Mercedes in the Constructors' Cup.
"I prefer to be in second place than in 4th or 5th," the official website of the championship quotes the head of the Italian team. – To be honest, if you remember, after the Chinese Grand Prix, where we were disqualified, we were behind Mercedes and Red Bull by 50 or 60 points (Vasseur exaggerates, in fact by 40 and 19 respectively), and now we are ahead of both these teams.
I think we've been doing a decent job in the last four or five stages. But at the same time, we must remember: we compete in Formula 1 to win races, and we don't want to stay second. That means we have to focus on fighting McLaren. I'm not talking about the championship, but about specific races. I think in the first 40 laps of the Spanish Grand Prix we weren't that much behind them in terms of pace."
After the finish, there was a lot of talk about the incident at the restart, when Leclair was ahead of Max Verstappen, but there was contact between their cars. The stewards did not apply any sanctions to the Ferrari driver, and Vasseur agrees with this decision.:
"I didn't even notice that there was any incident, to be honest, but then, together with Sky Sport, we tried to see what the steering position was in a straight line (on Charles' car), and it was at zero point. So it's not even an incident. But I can understand that Red Bull is upset after the last laps of the race, but it has nothing to do with Charles."
Leclair has already reached the podium three times in the first nine stages of the season, while Hamilton's best result on Sunday remains 4th place in the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. But he also scored a pole position and a sprint victory in China.
Although Ferrari is six points ahead of Mercedes in the team standings, it is already 197 points behind the championship leaders, and given that McLaren still has a clear advantage in speed, it is extremely difficult to recoup such a gap. It's understandable why Vasseur refuses to talk about the prospects of competing for the Constructors' Cup, especially since there are still so many races ahead.
