Zach Brown wants to race Jeff Gordon.
Since 1973, a special racing series called the International Race of Champions, abbreviated as IROC, has been held and was quite popular in the USA. The essence of it was that 12 drivers who had distinguished themselves in other championships were selected to participate in it, and they competed with each other on completely identical cars that most closely resembled NASCAR technology. However, sometimes show business stars who were interested in motorsport in their spare time also got behind the wheel.
The IROC existed until 2006, then went bankrupt, but last year an attempt was made to revive it, and in order to immediately attract attention to it, the promoters invited famous American racers of previous years, including Jeff Gordon, a four-time NASCAR champion.
It might not be worth writing about this purely commercial venture, but in August, as part of the annual Monterey Motorsports Reunion motorsport festival, a race will be held at Laguna Seca, California, in which Zach Brown, executive director of McLaren Racing, will speak with veterans of American motorsport.
We have talked about his passionate love for historical racing technology more than once, and now at the IROC he will pilot a 1977 Chevrolet Camaro, which recently joined his personal collection. The car has a really rich history: at one time, it was used not only by professional racers of the caliber of Cale Yardborough and Darrell Waltrip, multiple NASCAR champions, Mario Andretti and Alan Jones, Formula 1 title holders, but also Hollywood stars such as Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman.
Riverside International Raceway passed the tests, and Brown got behind the wheel of this car for the first time.
After that, he cheerfully shared his impressions on his social media pages.: "We are testing the legendary cars of the IROC series, but when I agreed to participate in all this, I knew that we would be racing in the cars of legendary racers, and now it turns out that we have to race with the racing legends themselves! It's not fair!.."
By the way, Jeff Gordon commented on these words as follows: "Most of all, I'm afraid that Zach Brown will get ahead of me!"
