Another F1 steward faces criticism from the FIA.
"Following recent unauthorized comments made in the media"
Another steward in Formula 1 has drawn the ire of the sport's governing body. Just weeks ahead of his scheduled role as an official at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, Johnny Herbert was removed due to a conflict between his FIA duties and his outspoken media remarks. Among other contentious comments made to gambling-related platforms, the former F1 driver remarked that Max Verstappen possesses a "horrible mindset." The FIA stated that Herbert's media activity and his role in F1 were "incompatible."
Now, another British ex-F1 driver, Derek Warwick, faces the same consequence. Although he was already working in Canada this weekend, he will be substituted by former F1 racer Enrique Bernoldi. This decision follows Warwick's comments last week on a gambling website, where he labeled Yuki Tsunoda a "disaster" for Red Bull, while claiming that Lance Stroll is only as capable as drivers like Tsunoda and Liam Lawson. The FIA issued a statement saying, "In light of recent unauthorized media comments, the FIA has decided to suspend Derek Warwick from his role as driver steward" in Montreal. Warwick "recognizes that his comments were misguided" and has "apologized," the FIA further explained, noting that Warwick will return to his duties in Austria.
