Briatore: Renault CEO's departure won't affect F1 team
"Nothing has changed for me. Neither for me nor for the team."
Luca de Meo's unexpected resignation as CEO of Renault has resulted in "absolutely nothing" altering at the Alpine F1 team. This is the assertion of Flavio Briatore, who was personally appointed by de Meo as "his executive advisor for the Formula 1 division" almost a year ago. At 75, Briatore has effectively taken on team boss responsibilities at the Enstone-based organization, following the surprising resignation of former Alpine team principal Oliver Oakes.
"Nothing," Briatore said in Montreal when asked about the effects of de Meo’s upcoming departure in July. "Nothing changed for me. Not for me or the team. And congratulations to Luca on his new job."
The Formula 1 paddock was taken aback on Sunday when the French newspaper Le Figaro reported that de Meo, 58, has stepped down and plans to become CEO of the Gucci-owning Kering group. "After five years at the helm of Renault Group, Luca de Meo has announced his decision to resign and seek new challenges outside the automotive sector," Renault confirmed shortly after in a statement.
