Domenicali suggests that Imola may make its comeback to F1 in 2027.
"Imola is our primary backup."
Imola might return to the Formula 1 calendar by 2027. This perspective comes from two influential figures: Italy's federal sports minister Andrea Abodi and F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. With the Madrid street race scheduled to launch in 2026, it will replace the renowned and beloved event at Imola's Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit, which is a favorite among purists and drivers alike. When asked about his disappointment regarding the loss of Italy’s second F1 race, Minister Abodi mentioned to the Italian news agency LaPresse that plans are being made for a potential "alternation" arrangement. F1 CEO Domenicali, who hails from Imola, affirmed this information.
"To begin with, for 2026, Imola is our first reserve," he stated to the Bologna newspaper Il Resto del Carlino. "If any venue were to withdraw for any reason, we would return to Imola with our cars and drivers. Starting in 2027, we could consider a rotation among the traditional European tracks," Domenicali continued. "This is an idea we're currently assessing with the involved parties." As a result, he urged both Italian officials and Imola supporters not to lose hope. "This is not a goodbye and certainly not a permanent defeat," Domenicali remarked. "I have emphasized from the start that we must acknowledge reality. Those organizing global events have requirements that must be recognized.
"That said, Imola remains in consideration." The interviewer Leo Turrini, a prominent Italian F1 commentator, concluded by asking Domenicali if he is genuinely committed to bringing the grand prix back to Imola. "Yes," replied the 60-year-old Italian. "We will return."
