"The team requires an alternative strategy to achieve success."
Lance Stroll is reportedly on borrowed time in Formula 1, as stated by a former grand prix driver. Sporting a bandage on his right wrist, the Canadian has returned from a one-race absence due to surgery following an injury. There were speculations that he re-injured his cycling accident from 2023 after a temper outburst during qualifying in Barcelona. Aston Martin confirmed that the 26-year-old was "upset." At his home race in Montreal, Stroll remarked, "I prefer not to elaborate as it pertains to my medical privacy, which I wish to keep confidential."
Stroll's ongoing interactions with the media and fans continue to tarnish his reputation, especially since he is often outperformed by his teammates, being the son of billionaire team owner Lawrence. Following brief, one-sentence replies to reporters at his home race on Thursday, Germany’s Sport Bild noted, "He sits languidly on the couch next to Lewis Hamilton and Franco Colapinto, noticeably chewing gum. Stroll’s responses were single-worded. How single-worded? Stroll’s average was 33.72 words per response."
"The performance left journalists bewildered," concluded the correspondent. Another reporter from France’s L’Equipe commented, "The man keeps being criticized by you, by us, by everything. And he continues to show it, without any shame." Timo Glock, a former Formula 1 driver, believes that with prominent names like Max Verstappen, George Russell, and Yuki Tsunoda possibly on the market, Stroll's nearly decade-long tenure in F1 should be nearing its end. "If you examine Stroll’s qualifying duel record, he has never been in a strong position," he told Sky Deutschland.
"Most of his defeats were quite clear, and he hasn't demonstrated consistency this year either. There are weekends where it appears he is catching up to Fernando Alonso, but over an entire season, he falls significantly short." Glock remarked, "Ultimately, Stroll is certainly not where he should be after his extensive time in Formula 1. If I were in charge at Aston Martin, would I retain him for 2026? No. Aston Martin requires a different approach if it aims to succeed. They need two drivers who consistently perform."
