"Fernando has the freedom to visit any team's pits."

Aston Martin's team principal is not concerned that Fernando Alonso might leave. On the surface, the Spaniard seems enthusiastic about the 2026 season, where he is set to drive the inaugural Adrian Newey-designed Aston Martin. Conversely, Alonso’s manager, mentor, and friend, Flavio Briatore, has recently regained near-total control of the Alpine team. Additionally, reports indicate that Alonso was seen multiple times in Alpine's hospitality area during the weekend in Canada.

"Fernando can visit the pits of any team," responded Aston Martin’s team boss Andy Cowell. "I have no issues with that. He knows many people in the pit lane across different teams. I’m pleased that Fernando is under contract with us for next season and I hope he remains with us longer as a brand ambassador."

The timing of Alonso’s visits to Alpine is intriguing, particularly in light of Jack Doohan and Franco Colapinto's lackluster performances alongside Pierre Gasly. Regarding Alonso’s contract for 2026, a journalist noted that contracts often hold little significance in Formula 1, especially concerning Briatore and Alonso.

"What do you mean by that?" Cowell asked. When informed that Briatore typically gets his way, Cowell replied, "No comment!"

This year, Alonso has faced challenges driving a less competitive Aston Martin, but he recognizes that the Newey project for 2026 is much more significant. "Whenever I discuss this year’s car with Fernando, he has that intense look, as if to say, 'You’re not compromising next year, are you?' He looks me in the eye to confirm," he shared. "I assure him, 'No, no, no, this will assist for next year,'" Cowell told AS newspaper.

Despite having only accumulated two points so far in 2025, Alonso maintained after qualifying in Montreal that he feels at the top of his game. "I believe my performance today was at the highest level," he told DAZN. "Aside from Max (Verstappen) and (George) Russell, I don’t think many drivers performed better."

Alonso is also sporting a distinctive moustache this weekend in Canada. "I think they’ll all be inspired to copy my moustache, just like they did with my idea of the yellow (medium) tyres during qualifying."
