Jack Brabham's grandson distinguished himself in the TransAm series
When it comes to racing dynasties, the Brabham family is certainly mentioned in this series, the founder of which was the famous Australian, Sir Jack Brabham, who became world champion three times, in 1959, 1960 and 1966.
Moreover, to this day he remains the only driver in the history of Formula 1 who won the title is on the car of Brabham's own team. She competed in the World Championship until 1992, where Damon Hill made his debut, and two years earlier one of her cars was piloted by another debutant, David Brabham, the youngest son of Sir Jack.
But David has two brothers, and Jeff's son, the eldest, Matthew Brabham, i.e. grandson of "Black Jack" (Jack Brabham had the nickname Black Jack), has been performing in various American series for many years. However, he once ran a couple of races for Andretti in Formula E, but unsuccessfully.
Now 31 years old, Matthew has become an experienced professional and this weekend won a race in the American TransAm series at the Mid-Ohio circuit, piloting the Ford Mustang of the CD Racing team. He also won qualifying, so he made it easier for himself by starting from pole position.
"First of all, many thanks to my family! – Matthew Brabham commented, standing at the top of the podium. – I want to thank my father, as well as the father of my fiancee Kim, for coming and supporting me... Of course, it's great when your family supports you, and the CD Racing team provided me with a beautiful and fast car!.."
On the one hand, Trans-Am is not the most popular racing series in the USA nowadays, On the other hand, it was worth mentioning the victory of a representative of the third generation of the Australian racing dynasty, because next month it will mark the 70th anniversary of Jack Brabham's debut in Formula 1.
On July 16, 1955, he entered the British Grand Prix for the first time driving a Cooper T40 with a Bristol engine, but did not reach the finish line. Nevertheless, it was his first race, and in total he had 123 Grands Prix in his long career, scoring 14 victories and winning 13 pole positions.
We have already mentioned his three titles, but it is worth adding that in 1967 he also became the vice-world champion - then he also piloted the car that bore his name. And in 2026, the family will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Sir Jack's birth, but that's another story.…
