Horner explained the main cause of Verstappen's problems.
Christian Horner explained that before the British Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing took a risk by choosing the car settings for Max Verstappen, which became the main reason for the issues encountered during the race.
Since certain difficulties were identified during Friday's practice sessions, Verstappen and his engineers decided to reduce the rear wing angle of attack, tuning the RB21 aerodynamic package to a very low level of downforce.
As a result, on Saturday, the four-time world champion managed to win the pole position in such an impressive manner, primarily due to the advantage in top speed over McLaren.
However, the downside of this approach was evident in Sunday's race when heavy rain poured down at Silverstone. Due to a lack of grip, Verstappen's car behaved very unstably on the wet track, and on the 21st lap, soon after the restart, his car spun, causing him to drop from second to tenth position.
As the track began to dry closer to the finish, he managed to recover somewhat and finished fifth, but now Max is already 69 points behind Oscar Piastri, who leads the championship standings.
"We changed the settings by reducing downforce almost to Monza levels and managed to achieve a certain balance, which allowed Max to unbelievably win the pole," admitted the Red Bull Racing team boss after the race, as quoted by RacingNews365. "This approach was based on a weather forecast predicting a 20 percent chance of rain on Sunday morning, followed by dry conditions.
I don't think any of the forecasts we saw predicted such heavy rain or that it would start so late. It’s quite clear that Oscar Piastri had a significant pace advantage, and as the tires overheated as the track dried, it became obvious that McLaren was much superior to everyone else. We were simply trying to hold out until the rain started.
It was a tough race, although if it had started two hours later, the outcome could have been different. However, defeating McLaren would still have been very difficult, but we would have had a shot at the podium."
