Custom drive modes featuring independent settings for elements like suspension and throttle response aren’t new, and several automakers have explored creative options, including variables for launch control and broader selectable ranges. However, Rivian is taking it to a new level with the introduction of a feature in the second-generation quad-motor 2026 R1T and R1S that allows you to fine-tune your ideal drive mode across 10 different performance parameters, similar to a Forza tuning menu.

Dubbed the RAD Tuner, this feature might seem overwhelming to some readers. My advice? Don’t use it! Nevertheless, considering the backstory, how it's implemented, and its potential for customizing the truck's driving experience, it’s a noteworthy addition that deserves appreciation.

The RAD in RAD Tuner stands for Rivian Adventure Department, a more informal group within Rivian that spearheads unique and exciting projects, like its Pikes Peak race truck, rather than being a formal department. In this instance, they have unlocked a multitude of drive settings, enabling drivers to adjust 10 variables, which include acceleration, regeneration, brake assist, steering assist, ride height, torque distribution, wheel slip, stability control, damping, and roll stiffness.

This feature will be available in September through a complimentary over-the-air (OTA) software update for the second-generation R1T and R1S Quad. It can be accessed from the left side of the screen at the top right of the drive mode selector, represented by an icon resembling an equalizer.

Accessing the RAD Tuner displays the current settings for each variable in the selected drive mode. Users can adjust these settings to their preference, and the system will promptly generate a new drive mode on the left side of the screen. The default designation for this new mode will reflect the original mode followed by “Modified.” However, users can tap on three dots at the top right of this newly created mode to delete, rename, or reset it. Now the R1S can have a Feder Mode—you're welcome, Rivian.

Adjusting the variables is straightforward, as each is represented by a large square on the 15.6-inch touchscreen, with sliders that expand when touched. Some functions, like acceleration and torque distribution, adjust in 10% increments, while others, such as stability control, are limited to On, Reduced, or Off options. Yes, there is an off option. The roll stiffness has three settings, and steering weight can be adjusted to either Sport or Standard.

The RAD Tuner comes preset with Hill Climb and Desert Rally configurations. The former represents the settings used by Rivian’s engineering team to secure a record at the 2024 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, while the latter reflects the setups used at the off-road Rebelle Rally. Each mode is accompanied by a small race helmet logo akin to those seen in McLaren vehicles.

Rivian’s Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid stated to The Drive that the RAD Tuner's purpose is to empower owners to fully customize their vehicle's behavior and responses. This system can save up to 8 or 16 personalized drive modes, and is designed to truly unlock and showcase the vehicle's “breadth of performance,” according to Bensaid. The exact number of saved modes is still to be confirmed.
