Formula E: Mitch Evans won the season's first pole position
On the rainy Berlin track, Mitch Evans finally showcased his skill and won his first qualifying session of the year. While in 2024 the New Zealand driver became the Vice-Champion of Formula E for the third time, he currently sits only 18th in the standings, just two races before the season's end (each consisting of two races).
However, this doesn't mean Mitch has forgotten how to race – partly due to issues with the Jaguar team’s car, partly due to bad luck, but today he managed to stand out again. "Again" – because he won the very first race of the season, but that was in São Paulo last December.
Since then, Evans hasn't risen above 12th place, but today he took pole position: in difficult conditions, he set his best lap nearly a second faster than the nearest competitor. It should be noted that the qualifying format was changed: the final session, i.e., the duels between the fastest drivers, was decided not to be held. Mitch earned pole because he posted the best time among the 22 participants of the two qualifying groups.
The second-best result was achieved by Robin Frijns of Envision Racing, who usually performs quite well in the rain. Oliver Rowland, the points leader, starts from third position, almost uncatchable by rivals.
“To be honest, I didn’t expect to get pole,” Mitch commented after qualifying. “This year, I’ve been quite inconsistent in this kind of weather and wasn’t sure what to expect. But after the first few laps, I realized I could gain a good advantage and kept pushing.
Let’s see what the weather will be like during the day – it could get worse or better. I hope the race will still take place. I also hope we can convert this pole into a good result – that’s our next goal for today.”
