McLaren will contact the FIA regarding the speech matter.

Andrea Stella mentioned that he plans to discuss with the FIA ways to restore Formula 1 drivers' ability to express themselves freely. The controversial FIA president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, faced significant backlash due to his stance against profanity and other behaviors from drivers.

"We’ve since modified Section B of the International Sporting Code to lessen the penalties for swearing," the 63-year-old noted during the British GP. "So we did listen to the drivers." Nonetheless, Article 12.2.1.f still permits severe penalties for "Any words, deeds or writings that have caused moral injury or loss to the FIA, its bodies, its members or its executive officers, and more generally on the interest of motorsport and on the values upheld by the FIA."

Max Verstappen, who has noticeably been quieter in FIA press conferences, specifically mentioned the existence of that clause. Championship leader Oscar Piastri held back his emotions after the Silverstone race regarding his 10-second penalty for braking behind the safety car. "I think I’ll get myself banned for the year if I say anything here," the Australian stated. Later, Piastri added, "I’m not going to say much. I’ll get myself in trouble."

McLaren team principal Stella supported Piastri’s viewpoint. "In such a heated environment, we always recommend our drivers to watch the scenes on video first and then comment," he was quoted by Auto Motor und Sport. However, he also believes the FIA should relax its stance enough for drivers to feel at ease when sharing their thoughts.

"If you’re not allowed to make fair statements for fear of repercussions, that’s a different issue," Stella remarked. "We need to reassess that, and we’ll do it in collaboration with the FIA. We’re not aiming to create a conflict, and there’s no conflict of interest in this regard either. All parties share the same interest," the Italian stated. "We always approach the FIA and the stewards in a cooperative manner."
