IndyCar: Zak Brown congratulated O'Ward on his victory in Toronto

A few days ago, we remembered Pato O’Ward, the Mexican IndyCar driver racing – and pretty well! – for Arrow McLaren Racing, who curiously commented on rumors of interest from Cadillac F1.

Don't be surprised if such rumors only increase: on Sunday, Pato won a race on the street circuit in Toronto, and he can once again be considered one of the contenders for the title. “Again” – because until yesterday, Alex Palou led the standings with such a significant gap that the question of his winning yet another championship seemed almost settled.

However, Palou and his team, Chip Ganassi Racing, made a clear tactical miscalculation, and the Spaniard finished only 12th, while O’Ward won, allowing him to reduce the gap to the leader by 30 points immediately. Of course, Alex’s lead remains quite substantial, unlike the likelihood of him being overtaken, but mathematically, O’Ward’s chances still exist.

There are four stages left in the season, with Palou 99 points ahead, but up to 54 points can be gained at each stage. If yesterday’s scenario repeats to some extent, nothing can be ruled out.

“I can’t say I saw this victory coming,” admitted Pato. “But I knew we had a great car, and the team was very clear in their tactics. The day looked promising – and it turned out that way. I am very happy for the whole team. I didn’t even expect everything to go so well in Toronto, as this track was previously the most difficult for us.

Only 99 points remain to be gained, though that’s no small number. We must ensure that we continue to perform like today. Not just in one race, but over several. I believe we can keep fighting for the title all the way to the final in Nashville – that’s my goal.”

Of course, such a mindset from his driver is supported by Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, who was an eyewitness to this significant victory of Pato O’Ward yesterday.

“Now we’re in a great mood!” he cheerfully commented. “Pato and the crew working on his car took victory on the streets of Toronto. It’s fantastic that I was here with the team, saw how well they executed the tactics, and was able to join in the celebration!”

Let’s remember that O’Ward is one of the few IndyCar drivers who hold a super license and have experience racing current-generation Formula 1 cars.
