Vaughn: The machine is working efficiently, that's encouraging.
Williams decided to take a risk by configuring Carlos Sainz's car specifically for rain, but the events in Spa on Sunday unfolded in such a way that this approach didn't pay off. However, Alex Albon performed very well in the race and earned important points with a sixth-place finish.
Team principal James Vowles: "We had a confident weekend, with Alex finishing sixth in today's race and Carlos finishing sixth in Saturday's sprint.
The Belgian Grand Prix was held in difficult weather conditions, and Alex handled it as professionally as possible, making no mistakes. The right tactical choices and a well-executed pit stop helped him maintain sixth position, although for a significant part of the race, he had to defend against Lewis Hamilton.
With Carlos, we decided to take a risk by betting that the rain accompanying the race would last longer. Like some other teams, we chose to install a larger rear wing on his car. But in reality, the track remained wet for only about ten laps, and as the asphalt started to dry, it became clear that the car was lacking speed due to these settings.
Overall, it turned out that today, this approach did not prove effective. But given our starting position, it made sense to try and gather some useful information. Additionally, Carlos's pit stop did not go perfectly, but we will analyze everything and aim to improve as the season progresses.
However, it's encouraging that the car is quite efficient, and I look forward to the upcoming races, which we will also try to make successful."
Alex Albon (6th): "I'm very pleased, because we beat all the other mid-field drivers, which is always nice. I'm glad I managed to hold off Lewis. While the track was still wet, I faced some difficulties, but that was to be expected, so early in the race, George Russell got past me, and I lost that position.
But after that, the situation stabilized, and we managed to stay in sixth place and achieve a good result. When Lewis was catching up to me, it was important not to make mistakes, but I think it helped that his Ferrari was set up with a higher downforce.
The team did a great job, because beating the top teams isn't easy, so I'm glad our car is working effectively."
Carlos Sainz (18th): "Before yesterday's qualifying, we made some setup changes, which cost us. Our starting position meant we had nothing to lose, so we decided to start the race from the pit lane, fully configuring the car for rain. Unfortunately, when the weather really was bad, there were red flags on the track, and as the race went on and the asphalt dried, it worked against us.
Additionally, I faced some issues during my pit stop, and overall, the race results disappointed me a bit. Nonetheless, on a positive note, we performed quite confidently in the sprint, and the technical updates on Alex's car worked well. So now, we'll prepare for the next stage of the season, which will take place in a week."
