F3: Rafael Camara won the race and the title
Rafael Camara won the Formula 3 race in Hungary on Sunday. This result secured the Brazilian Trident driver the 2025 Formula 3 championship title with one round remaining in the season.
Sunday morning greeted Formula 3 participants with rainy weather. By the start, the rain had stopped, but the track remained wet, so the race director decided to conduct a warm-up lap behind the safety car on wet tires.
The race began immediately. The top five kept their positions, and Charlie Wurz nearly lost his car in the first corner, after which Hugh Ugo Oguochukwu overtook him for sixth place. During the first lap, Timo Tramitz spun at the chicane and fell outside the top twenty.
Camara, leading, was one and a half seconds ahead of Marie Boy after the first lap of twenty-four, who in turn was 1.3 seconds ahead of Tuukka Taponen. On the second lap, Oguochukwu moved up to fifth place, overtaking Théophile Naël.
Nikola Zolov, needing to finish fourth to keep his championship hopes alive (assuming Camara's best finish is second), moved up from 21st to 19th position.
On the fourth lap, yellow flags appeared on the track, and a safety car was deployed due to Brad Benavides crashing into the wall at Turn 13 after contact with Romain Bilinski, who skidded on the wet asphalt.
The safety car left the track at the end of the sixth lap. During the restart, the top five maintained their positions, and Wurz moved up to sixth. Before entering Turn 5, a collision occurred between Gerard Sie and Ugo Oguochukwu.
Sie lost control of his car and collided with his rival; both cars retired, and a second safety car was deployed. Officials reviewed the incident and penalized Sie with a 10-second penalty, which would translate into a loss of positions at the start of the next race.
The restart took place on the eleventh lap and proceeded smoothly — the top ten drivers kept their positions. Camara immediately started to pull away from the peloton and set the fastest lap. By the twelfth lap, Zolov rose to eighth position.
On the fourteenth lap, Zolov moved up to seventh, overtaking Alessandro Giusti in the first corner. On the following lap, Nikola overtook Brando Badoer, and Marie Boy began reducing Camara's lead while setting the fastest lap. However, on the next lap, Zolov recorded his own fastest lap.
On the sixteenth lap, the 12-minute countdown to the race finish was activated. On the next lap, Martinius Stenshorne was the first to pit for tires. Turns out, the Hitech driver was in a hurry to make the switch.
Before the final lap, Camara posted the best time and extended his lead over Boi by two and a half seconds. Behind, Taponen fought hard to fend off Wurz's attacks for a podium position.
Rafael Camara confidently secured his fourth victory of the season and the Formula 3 champion title. Marie Boy's second place allowed him to move up to second overall in the standings. Taku Taponen stepped onto the podium for the third time this season. Nikola Zolov finished sixth, and Noel Leon recorded the fastest lap.
The final round of the Formula 3 season will take place from September 5 to 7 in Monza.
