Albers raises concerns about the 'friendly' environment among Formula 1 drivers.
Christijan Albers expresses difficulty in relating to the remarkably harmonious dynamics among today's Formula 1 drivers. In an appearance on De Telegraaf’s F1 podcast, the former Minardi and Midland racer compared the current environment—where competitors often travel, train, and socialize together—to his own time, when most drivers seldom spoke and some harbored open animosity toward one another.
This conversation was prompted by De Telegraaf’s F1 correspondent Erik van Haren, who recounted, "I had dinner in Budapest on Saturday, and a former champion at the table mentioned that he believes Max (Verstappen) is the only truly exceptional driver. He felt that many in the current field are rather average and expressed a longing for the distinct personalities that once characterized the sport. Nowadays, they all seem to be friends and often share laughter together. He feels there’s a lack of excitement, and not much is happening with Norris and Piastri, either. Do you agree with that perspective?"
While the pairing of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, along with their competition for the 2025 title, has led to some on-track tension and even contact, McLaren has consistently emphasized their camaraderie, a sentiment echoed by the drivers.
"I find it challenging," Albers confessed. "Perhaps it’s just that the world has changed and we’re in a different generation. I’ve never experienced it like this. There was more rivalry among us. Your teammate was your primary competitor. It wasn’t just a casual affair like playing cards; you socialized only during special occasions."
Albers posited that the portrayal of genuine friendship among teammates is largely for public image. "You can't convince me that Norris or Piastri go home and tell their girlfriends: ‘What a great guy, that Norris,’ or ‘I’m really happy for Piastri’s win.’ Do you genuinely believe that happens?"
