Domenicali will discuss the new sprint format with the teams.
Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of Formula 1, plans to discuss with championship participants the question of increasing the number of rounds featuring sprints, as well as changing the format of the short Saturday race — namely a reversed starting order.
"I really believe there is an opportunity to develop two aspects," Domenicali told The Race. "We need to discuss this with the teams and drivers, and of course with the FIA.
These aspects are: can sprint races be included in the schedule of a greater number of rounds? And would the approach of a reversed starting order, which we use in F2 and F3, be the right one? These are the questions we are going to discuss.
I think we have matured enough for the teams to take such matters seriously. Interest in this direction of development is definitely growing, so I am ready to present all of this to the teams and to have discussions with them not only about increasing the number of sprints, but also about new formats and new ideas."
If in the past teams, drivers and the majority of fans were opposed to any proposals related to a reversed starting order, now, according to Domenicali, attitudes toward it are no longer so categorical.
"We are open to this kind of discussion because, in my view, we must listen to the fans' opinions, try to create something and not be afraid of making mistakes," he continued. "Anyone who thinks they make no mistakes is simply not doing anything new.
In any case, there will be no return to the previous race weekend format. Whatever the right format may be, I think we should hold sprints. This is linked to the further development of the championship. I'm not saying they should take place at every round. Right now they happen six times a year, and the season consists of 24 rounds, and we should move in the direction where the number of sprints is somewhere in the middle."
