Perez's contract with Cadillac may be announced in Monza.
During the summer break the intensity of all kinds of rumours only grows, apparently because, for obvious reasons, there is less real news from the world of Formula 1 than during the active parts of the season. For example, PlanetF1 writes that a contract for Sergio Perez with Cadillac F1 is expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks — allegedly several different sources confirmed this to the British online publication.
In particular, it is reported that agreements between the parties have already been reached, and the contract could be announced during the Italian Grand Prix weekend.
The 35‑year‑old Mexican driver has been negotiating with the future factory team of the General Motors group for a year, and now he has changed managers, which, one would assume, did not happen by chance.
PlanetF1 quotes Antonio Perez, Sergio’s father, who has always passionately supported his son and continued to believe in him after he had to part ways with Red Bull Racing.
"You haven’t yet seen Sergio at his best. Everyone will be pleased and very proud of him," Perez Sr. said. "I can assure you that truly historic achievements lie ahead. He is not leaving Formula 1 — that’s the only thing I can say."
If the British outlet’s information is correct, the question of who will become the Mexican’s teammate remains open, since, according to rumours, one of the main candidates for a seat at Cadillac F1 was Valtteri Bottas, while the American team apparently wanted both an experienced professional and a young promising driver in its lineup.
That role was tipped for Felipe Drugovich, Aston Martin’s reserve driver, but in this context the American Jack Crawford and the Irishman Alex Dunne — who are currently fighting for the Formula 2 title — were also mentioned. Until recently Mick Schumacher was also on the list of contenders, especially since Graham Loudon, the head of the new team, had spoken very favourably of him.
But recently Jacques Villeneuve said rather categorically: "Mick Schumacher had difficulties when he raced for Haas. And he cannot be considered an experienced driver. There is no reason to bet on him."
Does the world champion know something or is he simply expressing his opinion, which he often does and in a very categorical way? One would assume we will know the answer in less than a month, if it is confirmed that the lineup of Formula 1’s 11th team will be revealed during the weekend in Monza.
