Is there a special clause in Hamilton's contract with Ferrari?

Lewis Hamilton's fortunes in his first year with Ferrari are unfolding far from how he and the Maranello team would have liked, so there has been a lot of talk lately about the prospects of this alliance.

Especially after the seven-time world champion called himself "useless" following an unsuccessful qualifying at the Hungaroring, where he failed to make the final session. However, the authoritative Italian Gazzetta dello Sport has revealed some details of the contract between Ferrari and the seven-time world champion, and it turns out that he, not the team, will decide how long their partnership lasts.

The basic terms are believed to be for two years, but there is an option for a third year that only Hamilton can exercise. In other words, he will decide whether to race for the Scuderia in 2027 or whether his cooperation with Ferrari will end.

Allegedly Maranello accepted this condition because of the commercial benefits of working with Hamilton, since the team constantly attracts media attention.

As the paper writes, "Ferrari will therefore continue to engage with him regardless of how events unfold."

Only time will tell whether that's true, but the fact remains: 14 rounds of the season have passed and Hamilton has yet to reach the podium, while Charles Leclerc has done so five times in 2025. Lewis sits sixth in the drivers' standings and has almost one-and-a-half times fewer points than his teammate.
