Oscar Piastri tries not to dwell on mistakes.
Oscar Piastri opened his 2024 win account by winning the Hungarian Grand Prix, and a year on the Australian McLaren driver leads the drivers' standings and has already stood on the top step of the podium six times this season.
Lando Norris has one win fewer so far; he trails his teammate by just nine points, and it seems their fight for the title will go right to the season finale. One of them is bound to become world champion, and it appears that with roughly equal racing talent Piastri has greater psychological resilience, an important quality that could prove decisive in the battle for victories.
However, it's not to say Oscar doesn't make mistakes: everyone remembers that in Australia, in the very first race of the season, he couldn't keep the car on the wet track, and although he returned to the fight, the spin cost him several positions — he was running second until lap 43 but finished only ninth.
At Silverstone Piastri received a 10-second penalty when he made an error braking behind the safety car, which cost him the victory that went to Norris. In Austria and Hungary, while chasing his teammate, Oscar locked up his brakes, and he was lucky that contact between the two McLarens was avoided.
But Piastri has an enviable quality: he doesn't fixate on mistakes, doesn't worry about them too much, and simply gets on with his job.
"Of course, at the end of last year we had success, but this year it's all going very differently," Oscar reflected in an interview with Sky Sports. "From the start of the season we have such a fast car, and I also feel I've taken a step forward. Combining those two factors I can say the year is shaping up to be fun."
When he was asked whether he dwells on his mistakes — because if not for them he would be leading the championship by a much more convincing margin — Piastri replied:
"I always find it pretty easy to leave them in the past and move on. You see, if you start to obsess over it, start thinking about all of it, you can fall down a rabbit hole. I'm not the only one who's lost points here and there. I try to think about the bigger picture — it always helps to get a balanced view of the situation. So I never dwell on it too hard."
It's worth adding that this is only Oscar Piastri's third season in Formula 1, and there's a good chance that he will be the one to claim the championship at the end of the year. However, let's not get ahead of ourselves — there are still ten races to go.
