Oscar Piastri: I'm just thrilled!
Oscar Piastri edged Lando Norris in qualifying by just 0.012 seconds, but that was enough for him to claim pole for the fifth time this season. For the 70th time in McLaren's history its drivers occupied the entire front row, and this happened on the birthday of Bruce McLaren, the team's founder.
Oscar Piastri (1st): "At the right moment we were able to hit the peak. I had a good mindset all weekend, but there were a couple of corners where I couldn't find more time. I still couldn't get them any better, but I made up for it in other parts of the lap.
The result made me very happy, because it felt like the weekend promised to be tricky, so I'm just thrilled right now! It was important to improve gradually — it's great that there was the opportunity to work so long in practice here.
I was faster in the parts of the lap I was already handling pretty well, which is how I won qualifying. I still need to make a few improvements, but overall I'm very pleased.
Every weekend my teammate and I try to beat each other. There are many aspects to our work that can be used one way or another, so we'll see how it all plays out tomorrow."
Lando Norris (2nd): "The margins are tight; they've been like that all weekend, and the situation could easily have gone in favor of either of us. I suppose I'm a bit disappointed to have missed out on pole, but it's not the end of the world. The rivalry was very close, and I put in some very good laps.
But when there's such a strong wind on track, a lot depends on luck. And that's despite the fact I've already been pretty lucky. But driving is not easy.
In the final session on my first attempt I did a good lap, but a headwind came up on the straight, and at that moment I lost about one hundredth — you could say that's when pole was lost.
But my starting position is quite favourable, and the battle with my teammate continues. Oscar has driven excellently all weekend, but we have both been driving well this season, so tomorrow should be a fun race.
Last year we both started terribly at this track — we'll see what happens this time. It's a long race ahead, we have many laps to do, and we'll also see what the weather brings."
