Pirelli unveiled the trophies for the Italian Grand Prix.
The recent Dutch Grand Prix was Pirelli's 500th race in Formula 1, but the Italian tyre-makers had informed everyone in advance that the main anniversary celebrations would take place during the weekend in Monza.
This is a logical step, since Pirelli is the title sponsor of the upcoming Italian Grand Prix. It is also responsible for the trophies that the winner and podium finishers will receive after Sunday's race.
Today the tyre-makers unveiled these prizes, the design of which was entrusted to designer Nico Vascellari, who is regarded as one of the leading figures in contemporary Italian art. Incidentally, he became known not only for works in various genres of graphics and sculpture, but also for experiments in the field of sound.
In the photographs shared by Pirelli are the trophies in which the artist embodied his vision of the "Chimera". This mythical creature of divine origin is first mentioned in Homer's Iliad: in Greek mythology the chimera is an immortal fire‑breathing monster with the head and neck of a lion, the body of a goat and a tail in the form of a snake.
Of course, the word also has a figurative meaning, which is encountered much more often than the original, and it is hard to say why Pirelli chose such an ambiguous image. But the trophies look original, and that much cannot be denied to their creator.
