Piastri: My teammate and I get along even better than before.
At the Dutch Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri claimed the first "Grand Slam" of his career — he started from pole, led every lap, won the race and set the fastest lap. After the finish, the McLaren driver answered questions at the press conference.
Question: In the race you kept things under control and now have a significant advantage in the drivers' standings over your teammate. Can you comment on the outcome of the Grand Prix?
Oscar Piastri: Yes. I have a sweet stuck in my teeth right now, so this is already the best press conference ever — we've been fed!
The race was really good. It felt like I had things under control from the start to the finish. The restarts required everything to be done correctly, but I managed those moments too.
It's a shame Lando was unlucky closer to the finish and the team was denied what I think would have been a deserved one-two. But I can be proud of what we achieved this week and that we were quick when it mattered. So I'm very happy.
Question: You said you're proud of the work done. Remember that twelve months ago in Zandvoort you were half a second behind Lando Norris in qualifying and finished fourth. How satisfied are you with the weekend, given last year’s results at this track?
Oscar Piastri: Very satisfied. I consider qualifying the key session of this weekend. Practice was difficult, and after it it seemed the weekend at Zandvoort would again be tricky. But we gradually improved, tried to find ways to make up time, and adjusted the setup. At the same time I tried to improve my driving, because it's hard to complain about our car.
So I just tried to keep improving, and it worked. In the race I had good pace and could push when necessary. So I'm very pleased with myself and the whole team, because we managed to turn things around compared to twelve months ago.
Question: The rivals got closest to you at the start. Can you tell us about the first corners?
Oscar Piastri: Yes, I didn't get the best start, and I had to stick to the inside line. I knew Max [Verstappen] was starting on Softs, so I was keeping an eye on him. In turns two and three I saw Max in the mirrors alongside me and I just hoped he wouldn't run into me. It all worked out. After that I looked after the tyres and managed the situation. I'm very happy.
Question: You now lead by thirty-four points over your teammate. There’s still a long way to go until the end of the season, but the gap is sizeable. Will you now take fewer risks and start calculating in races how much you can lose or gain with different maneuvers?
Oscar Piastri: No, I don't think so. There's still a long way to go until the end of the season. I have to keep attacking and try to win races. I can't call such a lead comfortable. As we've seen, one retirement can very quickly change the balance of power. So, given the number of races left, my lead doesn't feel very comfortable.
Question: Have your relations with Lando changed over the past year, given that you're now fighting for the title? And some people compare you to Michael Schumacher because you don't make mistakes and are very calm. What do you think of that comparison?
Oscar Piastri: My relationship with Lando hasn't changed. On the contrary, we know each other better and get on even better than before.
Every time you're mentioned in the same sentence as Michael Schumacher, that's a good thing. But I'm still a long way from being someone you could compare to someone of his level, but I'll survive somehow.
