Tsunoda: I'm determined to keep doing what I'm doing.
Yuki Tsunoda is preparing for the fifth Italian Grand Prix of his career, but it must be admitted that Monza has clearly not been lucky for him: in three of the four previous races at this circuit he retired due to various problems, mostly technical. And last year Yuki, then racing for Racing Bulls, didn’t reach the finish because of a collision with Nico Hülkenberg’s car.
Now, having become a Red Bull Racing driver, Tsunoda hopes to break this negative trend.
Yuki Tsunoda: “This year things haven’t gone much better so far either, yet I love this track, although it’s very difficult to find confidence behind the wheel here, and I’m looking forward to the upcoming Grand Prix. In every race I try to make a good impression on the team, on its leadership, because results are always the most important.
At the same time I intend to keep doing what I’m doing, since I don’t think I need to make any serious changes to my driving approach. And in general, since Laurent Mekies took over the team, I’ve been showing not such bad results. It’s not for me to decide whether they are good enough or not, but I intend to keep pushing.
I believe that from the first day I sat behind the wheel of the RB21 I’ve been gradually progressing, because I’m sure I’m moving in the right direction. Moving to another team mid-season isn’t easy, and there have also been various changes at Red Bull, but I know I’m getting closer and closer to the required level of results. I just need to put everything together, which is all the more important given how fierce the competition is.
In each of the qualifying sessions, starting from the first, the margins are measured in milliseconds, but I think in Zandvoort I managed everything, and in terms of progress it was one of my best race weekends. It wasn’t easy, also because of safety cars and other complications, but I still managed to score points, which I’m very pleased with.”
