Charles Leclerc: I'll be surprised if we win the race.
Charles Leclerc set the fourth-fastest time in qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver is pleased with his lap but does not expect to win on Sunday.
Lewis Hamilton qualified fifth but will start tenth due to a penalty received at the previous round in Zandvoort.
Charles Leclerc (4th): "I know my first lap was... I don't want to say perfect, because I don't think anyone can do a perfect lap, but I was as close to perfect as I wanted to be. And I knew beforehand that it would be difficult to repeat that result on the second attempt — and I didn't.
When I saw that Max was ahead, I knew I had to go all out on the first attempt in the final. Of course, I tried to do even better on the second, but it didn't work out.
I don't regret anything, because I have the best starting position we could have hoped for. Of course, when I set the fastest time I wanted to believe, but the rivals brought us back to reality.
Last year we achieved the almost impossible. We stuck to an alternative strategy, which allowed us to win. However, this year it will be harder than last year, and I think it's obvious to everyone which strategy to follow in the race. It won't be easy to come up with something different.
I'll be very surprised if we win the race, but never say never."
Lewis Hamilton (5th): "I am very, very pleased with the progress, especially on my side of the garage. Last week we looked more confident, and we look even better this weekend — the gap to my teammate is within a tenth. Progress is already visible, but we need to keep working.
It's amazing to race at Monza as a Ferrari driver. I simply have no words to describe it! The fans are incredible, and since Wednesday, from the event in Milan, we've felt their energy and support. When you leave the pits, the grandstands on the left and right are drowned in red for the entire lap.
I don't know what result is possible in the race, but I'll try to fight my way up."
