Domenicali: Cadillac is guaranteed to benefit F1
In October 2023 the FIA approved Andretti's application to take part in Formula 1, but Liberty Media opposed the debut of an eleventh team. Everything changed only after the American auto giant General Motors joined the project, and the team was renamed Cadillac.
Formula 1 CEO and president Stefano Domenicali described how Liberty Media's attitude toward the new team's project changed.
"We have always said that for Liberty Media the crucial thing is the quality of the product we will get in the medium and long term," Domenicali says. "When we saw Andretti's project, our opinion was negative. Not because Mario Andretti is a bad person — he is a legend of the sport and a friend. It's just that we did not see in the project the substance we considered necessary.
The situation changed with the arrival of General Motors. We saw significant investments as part of a 10-year plan, and we immediately reacted positively, because we believe that in this case the project can bring additional value to the championship.
And we are already seeing that. They are investing in the US market to promote their own initiatives. So the appearance of a new team is guaranteed to be beneficial."
