Aston Martin found the cause of Fernando Alonso’s unexpected retirement in Monza when, after attacking the kerb on the exit of Ascari, the right-rear suspension link broke — a load that would normally be routine for it. Engineers discovered that the component had lost its strength due to an incident on the first lap. On-board camera footage shows gravel and debris striking the Spaniard’s car, which damaged the suspension. “The team can confirm that on the first lap of the race gravel entered Fernando’s car in several places, including the suspension, which led to its damage,” Aston Martin said in a statement. During the race the team was not aware of the damage sustained. A small but persistent load led to the part’s eventual failure.
