Fernando Alonso acknowledges that 2026 might be his last season in Formula 1, and that a competitive Aston Martin could lead him to retire on a positive note. "It hinges on how I feel next year, physically and mentally," stated the 44-year-old two-time world champion, who hasn't clinched a grand prix victory in the past ten years. "But I'm uncertain," Alonso mentioned to AS newspaper in Baku. "I don't have a definite idea right now. If the car performs well, there's a significant chance it will be my final year."

Alonso remarked that the impending regulatory changes represent his last opportunity to enhance his record. "I recognize that it's my final chance," Alonso confirmed. "It's the key factor—it's the last opportunity to try to win another grand prix, savor the good moments, get on the podium, and contend for a championship."

He noted that Newey's arrival has already had a significant impact. "He's certainly up to the challenge. He's a unique designer compared to anyone I've encountered before. Very methodical, yet at the same time, mystical. Brilliant."

Alonso admitted that even if 2026 proves successful, his career may not extend far beyond it. "They might perform well in the first year, but by the second or third, they're sure to excel," said the Spaniard. "However, I need to assess it for myself. If the car underperforms, I might consider staying for another year to end on a positive note. If the car performs well, then 2026 will likely be my last year."

Alonso expressed the desire for clarity ahead of his potential farewell season. "In 2018, when I departed from F1, I recall that sensation when I went to Japan and at other Grands Prix where it hadn't been announced yet, while I was already toying with the thought of it being my last year. So, I tried to enjoy the drivers' parades—and in my mind, I'd like to know so I can internally say goodbye to each track."

Regarding his ongoing motivation, Alonso assured his fans that he wouldn't remain in Formula 1 if he feels he has lost his pace. "It won't be due to a lack of competitiveness," he stated. "When I leave Formula 1, I aim to do so while still considering myself the best. And for those outside, at least 30 or 40 percent should still see me as the best. I don't wish to depart because I've lost my abilities. I want to exit on a high note."
