Fernando Alonso suggested he might end his career in 2026.
Fernando Alonso's contract with Aston Martin runs until the end of 2026. In Baku, the Spanish driver indicated that next season could be his last in Formula 1, but the decision will largely depend on results on track.
Fernando Alonso: "I know that our team has a much better chance of performing well in 2027 or 2028, when we'll already have stability thanks to Adrian Newey and other specialists. But we can also perform well in the first year of the new regulations. Still, in the second or third year we are guaranteed to perform well.
As for me, I will make the decision myself. If the car turns out to be bad in 2026, then there's a high chance I'll stay another year to finish my career on a positive note. If the car turns out to be good, then 2026 will likely be my last year.
I know this is my last chance, and that's the deciding factor. I view the upcoming changes to the regulations simply as changes, and I hope our team interprets them correctly and builds a fast car. But unlike previous regulation changes, for me these are the last changes of my career and my last chance to win a Grand Prix, get on the podium and fight for the title.
There are high hopes attached to the 2026 changes. Although they don't differ much from previous regulatory changes, emotionally they are very important to me."
