Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly apologized to the team.
Alpine's qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix ended in the first session. In the decisive run Pierre Gasly made a mistake and ran into the run-off area at turn four, and Franco Colapinto, who was following, crashed his car at the same turn. After the session both drivers apologized to the team for the mistakes they made.
Franco Colapinto (16th): "Compared to Friday we made a few steps forward, and today the car was much better to drive. My first fast lap in qualifying on Soft tyres was good, and I was fighting to make it through to the second part.
At the start of the decisive lap I was on target, but because of a strong gust of wind at turn four I completely lost control of the rear of the car and hit the outside wall. The wind plays a big role at this circuit, and today its gusts caught many out, which led to a number of incidents and stoppages in qualifying.
It's a shame I couldn't finish the lap because I was happy with the car and I had a good chance of getting through to the second part. I apologise to the team for adding to their workload.
We'll see what result is possible on Sunday. There are usually a lot of surprises in the Baku race."
Pierre Gasly (19th): "It was very difficult to drive today because of the strong wind. I apologise to the team for the mistake, which, regardless of the conditions, is my fault.
I was trying to brake as late as possible before turn four, but as soon as I pressed the brake pedal I lost control of the rear of the car. I went on to avoid a collision.
Maybe a gust of wind interfered with me, but it's still a pity we couldn't complete the lap since it seemed we were close to making it into the second part. I was pushing and I had to take the risk.
Tomorrow we'll try to do something in the race. The car is difficult to drive on this circuit because it lacks stability, which makes me uncomfortable behind the wheel. In the race I'll do everything I can to achieve the best possible result."
