Oscar Piastri: I kept making stupid mistakes
For Oscar Piastri, the leader in the drivers' standings, the Baku weekend was frankly unsuccessful, and the Australian McLaren driver self-critically admitted that he was to blame for everything: both the false start and the first-lap crash. His teammate, Lando Norris, at least made it to the finish, but only took 7th place.
Oscar Piastri (retired): "Certainly not my best day. I was simply too eager at the start and made a stupid mistake because of it. If we talk about the crash, I should have foreseen how turbulent air would affect the car, but I didn't. I was definitely carrying too much speed into that corner — that's it.
The grip level was too low, but I should have known that. So, of course, I have no one to blame for what happened but myself. I misjudged the situation — of course that's frustrating.
We had difficulties on Friday, but on Saturday things could have come together very well, at least in theory, and in practice I drove some decent sectors, but I couldn't piece together a good lap. Today I kept making stupid mistakes — overall it was a tough weekend, that's for sure, but I'd be more upset if I were slow, trying to fight back and making mistakes because of that.
But they only happened because I misjudged the situation. Of course you never want to be in that position, but I'm more worried about the mechanics — I gave them a lot of work this weekend. My lead in the drivers' standings has been reduced, but right now I'm not too concerned about that. I'm focused only on my job, on what I can do to perform better.
There's still a long way to go in the season, and while weekends can go differently — some better, some worse — the championship fight continues, and that's what matters most to me."
Lando Norris (7th): "I did everything I could yesterday and today. Opportunities to succeed can present themselves at any weekend, and for every race I didn't win you could say there were missed opportunities. Of course I wanted to produce a better result today.
Yesterday the chances for a better result were lost because we went out on track too early, although if I'd put in a better lap I could have gained a couple of places. That still wouldn't have changed anything today, because overtaking was impossible. Overall, I'm more disappointed about qualifying than the race."
