Andrea Stella: Piastri made uncharacteristic mistakes
Andrea Stella summed up the disappointing Baku race weekend, clearly the worst for McLaren this year, noting that the problems had started as early as Saturday.
"Overall it was a difficult weekend," admitted the McLaren team principal. "We had a poor qualifying yesterday, and today we couldn't fix anything. In fact, if we're honest, things only got worse because Oscar was involved in a crash.
The mistakes he made today are completely uncharacteristic for Oscar. We can only hope that they were all concentrated in this weekend and that the rest of the season goes smoothly. Piastri could probably be considered the most consistent driver, and we hope this remains an isolated incident.
Speaking about Lando's race, we have to admit that we failed to provide him with a sufficiently quick car that would have allowed him to fight his way through the pack, so he spent the whole day in traffic. We could have done better and should have – let's consider it a sort of useful lesson. Now we need to regroup and properly prepare for the Singapore round.
For me the most important conclusion is that our car wasn't fast enough. If it had been fast, I think we could have overtaken, and if Norris had been on clear track he would have been able to make full use of the MCL39's speed potential."
