Hamilton's brother survived a fire during a BTCC race.

Nicholas Hamilton, the younger brother of Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton, was involved in a dangerous incident during a British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) race at Silverstone this past weekend.

On the 18th lap of the first race his Cupra Leon suddenly caught fire. The blaze frightened the 33-year-old Hamilton, but he was able to get out of the car quickly, avoiding injury. The car sustained serious damage, and Nicholas had to end his weekend there. This brought to an end his run of 25 consecutive starts.

On social media Nicholas posted a photo of the burned car and suggested that his season might be over.

“What a striking photo of a very disappointing and frightening moment for me, my family and friends,” Nicholas Hamilton wrote. “I remained surprisingly calm throughout the whole situation, trying to prevent further damage to the car while also ensuring my own safety. I am very proud of myself and how I handled the situation.

After the fire, my participation in the final round of the season at Brands Hatch next weekend is in doubt. If I don’t get the chance to finish the season, I want to thank everyone who has supported me this year. Thanks to friends, family and sponsors for the constant love and support that help me chase the dream.

I believe I am performing better now than ever in the BTCC, and I am very proud of my progress this year.”
