Sainz and Leclerc were returning from Baku after some adventures.
Even if Formula 1 drivers travel the world in comfort and fly on private planes, that's no guarantee that everything will go smoothly and without complications.
Charles Leclerc shared a short video on social media, filmed on a phone on the way to Monaco — he, Carlos Sainz and two other companions were travelling in a rented minivan on the roads of Italy, even though they hadn't planned to end up in that country.
Carlos was driving, and the following playful dialogue occurred between them.
Charles Leclerc: After a very difficult weekend in Baku I thought it couldn't get any worse. But!.. Carlos, we're looking at you! Where are we?
Carlos Sainz: Somewhere in the middle of Italy.
Charles Leclerc: Exactly. And why?
Carlos Sainz: Because we were avoiding a storm, couldn't land in Nice, so the plane touched down somewhere in the middle of Italy. There we rented a minivan and now we're driving to Monaco (laughs).
Charles Leclerc: Wonderful!
Carlos Sainz: It's about a two-hour drive, but we'll try to make it in one and a half.
Charles Leclerc: Don't do that!
Carlos Sainz: No, no, what are you!..
In short, the Spanish Williams driver, who raced alongside Leclerc for Ferrari until last year, made it clear he was joking and had no intention of breaking the speed limit.
It was clear he was in great spirits, as he had stood on the podium in Baku — a very rare achievement for Williams in recent years — but this time the success was by no means accidental. It is the result of the work the British team has been doing for a third season under the leadership of James Vowles.
And when Leclerc says that "it couldn't get any worse", it's hard to argue with that too. On Saturday he crashed his car in qualifying, which meant he started from the uncharacteristic-for-him 10th position. During the race his SF-25 began to have power unit problems, which prevented him from overtaking rivals and he finished ninth.
However, the main thing is that he and Carlos ultimately made it to their destination, albeit somewhat later than planned.
