Ayrton Senna's road-legal Mercedes will be sold at auction.
A road-going 1985 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3-16 that was owned by the legendary Ayrton Senna will be sold at RM Sotheby's with an estimated value of $300,000–$340,000.
To mark the reopening of the Nürburgring and the launch of the new Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3-16 in 1984, a "Race of Champions" was organized — Niki Lauda helped assemble the renowned drivers. Among them were nine Formula 1 champions and two up-and-coming drivers — Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. It is said that Emerson Fittipaldi gave up his place to the Brazilian.
All the cars on the track were slightly race-modified 190 E 2.3-16s; Senna drove the smoky silver metallic car wearing number 11.
In qualifying Senna took third place, behind Prost and Royteman, but he went on to win the race convincingly. The car appealed to the Brazilian, and in October 1985 he purchased it, personally collecting it from the Mercedes-Benz factory.
Senna used the car for two years; the last service receipt shows a mileage of 24,862 miles, after which he sold it because he was moving to Monaco. The next owner was Robin Clark, a friend of Senna's manager Julian Jakobi.
The car comes with the original documents, the factory invoice and a tax receipt in Senna's name. Another distinctive feature of the car is Niki Lauda's autograph under the hood.
