Ferrari are investigating an engine issue on Charles Leclerc's car that prevented the driver from achieving a better result than ninth in Baku. It turned out that in the early stages of the race Leclerc's power unit was running inconsistently, causing him to lose two tenths per lap.
"An engine problem arose on Charles' car, which we will investigate," said team principal Frederic Vasseur. "Although it was not critical, it was enough that he could not overtake on the straight. That's why Charles got stuck behind Liam Lawson.
"We most regret the qualifying result, because the car's pace would have allowed higher places, and it was in qualifying that we lost our chances for a successful weekend. It's encouraging that the car had pace, but it's a pity we couldn't make use of it.
"The result depends on two components — pure speed and its implementation. Charles took responsibility for qualifying, but we also need to work on the machinery to perform better at the next round.
"In the race Charles' car experienced engine problems that meant he could not overtake on the straights. Because of the engine he was losing two tenths per lap and could not stay close to the car ahead. Those problems cost Charles dearly."
