Negotiations between Barcelona and FOM continue.
Contrary to rumours that the Barcelona circuit will remain on the World Championship calendar beyond 2026, the Spanish press reports that no formal agreements with FOM have yet been signed.
At the same time, it is said that the Catalan circuit could host Formula 1 races every two years alternating with the Spa circuit.
“We continue to try to reach the best possible agreement for the coming years,” the newspaper Marca cites a source as saying, calling him “close to the circuit’s management.”
The scenario under which the mentioned two-year cycle could be implemented has been discussed for several months, but it is emphasised that this is only one of the possible options.
Apparently, one will have to wait until May 2026 — that is when the official presentation of the June race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will take place, and by that time it should become clear whether this Grand Prix will be the last or whether the usual event will remain on the calendar.
But it is certain that the race called the Spanish Grand Prix will, from next season, take place in Madrid on the new MadRing circuit, which is currently under construction.
It seems that this means the event at the circuit located in the town of Montmeló, about 30 km from Barcelona, will be renamed the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. The Catalan circuit has regularly hosted Formula 1 races and tests since 1991, and the circuit management has always had excellent business relations with FOM.
The newspaper Marcs recalled the words of Stefano Domenicali, President of Formula 1, who at the official presentation of the upcoming Madrid race said: “As for the future, negotiations are ongoing, so we’ll see if we can continue our collaboration with Barcelona, with which we have an excellent relationship.”
In the championship calendar for 2026 this circuit is mentioned twice: first, from 26 to 30 January it will host the first winter tests, which will not be open to members of the press or to fans; and second, from 12 to 14 June the Catalan circuit will host the 9th round of the season.
